Barbara Verrochi holds a BFA in Sculpture from Philadelphia College of the Arts and an MFA in Fine Arts from Hunter College. An educator since 1986, she taught art, physical education, and yoga in every borough of NYC until 2000. Barbara’s experience working within the NYC public school system greatly informs her current work as a curriculum adviser and writer, project manager, and training supervisor for health and wellness programs. Before co-directing Set/Reset (formerly Breathe, Move, Rest), Barbara was engaged with other programs that serve public school communities across the country, such as Bent On Learning and Pure Edge. She co-created and teaches the Yoga Minor at Long Island University.
Barbara began studying yoga in 1990. From 1997 until 2009, she was a student of Ashtanga Yoga under the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and continues to study this method with Sharath Jois, Saraswati Jois, Eddie Stern and Maria Rubinate. She is also an enthusiastic student of anatomy, Iyengar yoga, chanting and meditation under the guidance of Genny Kapuler, Sharon Salzberg and Gulum Mohamed Kahn.
Since 2002, Barbara co-owns The Shala, yoga studios in Manhattan and Brooklyn, with Kristin Leigh. Together they direct and teach the Mysore Ashtanga, vinyasa, Shala teacher trainings, and mentorship programs. She lives in Brooklyn with her beautiful son.
